And here we go! First week of The Great Alaskan Tour. We will start with a symbolic entry in Alaska by the Southeast, flying over Misty Fjords National Monument and into the Inside Passage, to Annette Island, part of the Alexander Archipelago. We will continue to visit Prince of Wales, one of the biggest US islands and then to Ketchikan, the southeastern most sizable city in the state. I wish you a great journey and many awsome flights!
CZST Stewart, Altitude 22 feet, Runway 18/36, 3900 x 75 feet, Asphalt 4ZT Hyder, Altitude 0 feet, SW/NW (0/180 degrees), 10000 x 1000 feet, Water
We're starting TGAT with a simbolic entry in Alaska, in the Southeast. Just a short, 2 miles hop from Stewart, Canada, to Hyder, Alaska, both towns at the head of the Portland Canal but on diferent sides of the border! So to Hyder, where bears come to dine at Fish Creek!
Today's flight calls for an amphibious aircraft. This is probably the shortest leg you'll ever fly! Hyder that's a mere 2 miles from Stewart, well lined up. So take off, and water land
4ZT Hyder, Altitude 0 feet, SW/NW (0/180 degrees), 10000 x 1000 feet, Water MTM Metlakatla, Altitude 0 feet, EW/WW (90/270 degrees) 5000 x 5000 feet, Water; NW/SW (0/180 degrees) 5000 x 5000 feet, Water
Next we'll be flying to Metlakatla on the west coast of Annette island. The island has status as a federal reservation for the Tsimshian Indians, and long-term visits require a permit. Metlakatla is Alaska's only Indian reservation.
NAV1 - 117.10 ANN ANNETTE ISLAND VOR - VOR1/HSI R-219 Leaving Hyder fly south along the Portland Canal as you climb, until you are on top of ANN's radial 219. The signal is being transmitted from the Annette Island VOR station will work like a "crossroad" on the Portland Canal and you'll be taking the starboard turn; keep flying and tracking the radial for some 12 nautical miles (use your DME) and that will put you at the head of the Boca de Quadra Bay. You are flying over the Misty Fjords, so follow the water course until the waters of the Inside Passage on a general 190º course, and then straight to the VOR: for that, find the radial you're over and then use that bearing to fly to Metlakatla on the Annette Island. Once on top of the VOR fly a 335 course outbound and after 4 miles you'll find the waters of MTM Metlakatla.
MTM Metlakatla, Altitude 0 feet, EW/WW (90/270 degrees) 5000 x 5000 feet, Water; NW/SW (0/180 degrees) 5000 x 5000 feet, Water HYG Hydaburg, Altitude 0 feet, EW/WW (91/271 degrees), 5000 x 2000 feet, Water
To Hydaburg! We'll fly over Clarence Strait to the Prince of Wales Island, the fourth largest island in the United States and the 97th largest island in the world! There's an excellent collection of restored totem poles at Hydaburg, and you may enjoy good salmon fishing ... in the fall. Huge runs of salmon migrate from the open ocean, around Prince of Wales Island, and into the protected waters of the Inside passage near Ketchikan.
NAV1 - 117.10 ANN ANNETTE ISLAND VOR - VOR1 R-257 Leaving Metlakatla switch to VOR1/HSI to radial 257. Takeoff and and turn to 212º until you intercept radial 257 on an outbound course. Track the new radial and fly 42.8nm to Hydaburg. That will put you on a straight-in approach to Hydaburg's "runway" WW.
Hydaburg to Craig
HYG Hydaburg, Altitude 0 feet, EW/WW (91/271 degrees), 5000 x 2000 feet, Water CGA Craig, Altitude 0 feet, NW/SW (1/181 degrees), 10000 x 2000 feet, Water
Craig, our next stop: Fishing and timber town, but many people like it for its kayaking possibilities and access to the many caves on Prince of Wales Island.
ADF - 229.0 AKW KLAWOCK NDB NAV1 - 115.80 AKW KLAWOCK DME (no VOR) Craig is 19.7nm from Hydaburg on a 301 heading. So how to tell when you're there? We'll measure from Klawock instead. With your radios set for Klawock's NDB/DME fly until you get a reading of 5.9nm on DME. The ADF will point to Klawock Airport, our next stop... just 6 miles away
CGA Craig, Altitude 0 feet, NW/SW (1/181 degrees), 10000 x 2000 feet, Water PAKW Klawock, Altitude 78 feet, Runway 2/20, 4990 x 100 feet, Asphalt
Klawock's first settlers were Tlingit who came from the northern winter village of Tuxekan. They used it as a fishing camp for the summer period, and called it by several different names: Klawerak, Tlevak, Clevak, and Klawak.
Leaving Craig just follow your NDB gauge. That's a mere 6 miles to the station, which stays half a mile before the airport so you'll have a visual before that.
PAKW Klawock, Altitude 78 feet, Runway 2/20, 4990 x 100 feet, Asphalt KPB Point Baker, Altitude 0 feet, Runway NW/SW (0/180 degrees), 4000 x 250 feet, Water
Point Baker on the northern side of the Prince of Williams Island is out next destination. As of the census of 2000, there were 35 people, 13 households, and 9 families residing at Point Baker!
NAV1 - 116.50 LVD LEVEL ISLAND VOR - VOR1 R-042 After takeoff fly a 313º heading. Point Baker is some 50 miles away. To find our landing stop we will use the Level Island VOR as a bearing point: as you approach the north of the island check your VOR/HSI needle as it will center when you are lined up both with Point Baker and the VOR station, and when at 19.2 nm DME, that will be it!
Point Baker to Ketchikan Intl
KPB Point Baker, Altitude 0 feet, Runway NW/SW (0/180 degrees), 4000 x 250 feet, Water PAKT Ketchikan Intl, Altitude 98 feet, Runway 11/29, 7484 x 150 feet, Asphalt
You've been at Ketchikan a lot of times, for sure! So you'll probably know that Ketchikan is Alaska's southern most port of call for most cruises, and also that it has the world's largest collection of totem poles!
ADF : 396.0 CMJ CLAM COVE (KETCHIKAN) Well, I won't tell you how to fly to Ketchikan! leaving Point Baker continue your flight around the northern part of the Prince of Wales Island, and come down south on the east side. Then you're on your own!

OK, I finished the section from Stewart to Annette Island. Bush Flying Unlimited has some interesting add-on scenery for this part of the trip. I'm off to see how far I can get this afternoon. keman - Ken Manwell
